English Oak

Not only is the Oak a beautiful tree but the timber it produces has extremely  useful qualities. Oak came to Britain just under 10,000 years ago after the last ice age & during the following 3,500 years spread northwards to inhabit most of the UK. The warming during the post-glacial period also encouraged animals to move northwards, which in turn were followed by Hunter gatherers, as the population increased, oak became an ever more useful resource because of its strength and durability, further more there is evidence dating back as far as 7,500 BC of oak being used as a building material, it also became popular with industry & large forests were felled for the production of charcoal for smelting during the Bronze age .

Douglas fir is a softwood alternative to oak. It still has superb structural qualities & is very durable it also has a very  distinctive sweet aroma.
